White Springtails (Folsomia candida)
White Springtails (Folsomia candida)
Springtails, are omnivores and will feed on the decaying organics, fungus and some types of mold in your terrarium or bioactive setup. Adding a starter culture of these amazing clean-up artists with your isopods assists a healthy tank (and less cleaning for yourself). They prefer a humid (moist) environment and this particular species is not meant for arid (dry) conditions.
This “starter culture” is just that, a way to start your own colony of White Springtails. Add them straight into your enclosure, or start a separate “master culture” to distribute throughout many enclosures.
Unpacking your Springtail Starter Culture
- We ship your springtails on a custom blend of Calcium Clay that is still moist.
- To extract your springtails into the desired enclosure, briefly add a light amount of room temperature water in the cup (floating most of the springtails).
- Pour the water/springtails into the desired enclosure "seeding the enclosure".
- After seeding the enclosure, you can add 1 piece of raw rice to the starter cup. This should last 2-4 weeks feeding the remaining springtails and culturing the colony (the clay should remain moist and may require a light misting every 1-3 weeks).
- Repeat steps 1-2 to continually culture more springtails.

Unpacking your Springtails
Unpacking your Springtails
Prior to your springtails arrival, we recommend placing a glass of clean water out so that any chlorine can evaporate, and the water can reach room temperature.
- For the safest possible shipping, your springtail starter culture arrives on a moist paper towel.
- There may be many young springtails that are nearly impossible for the human eye to see on a paper towel.
- We recommend briefly filling the culture cup with the room-temperature / chlorine-free water and then immediately pouring the culture into your desired enclosure.
A second option is to place the entire paper towel into your prepared enclosure and leave it there for awhile so the new springtails can freely roam to their desired locations.
